The Foil Gybe

Flying across the wind on a foil feels incredible. But at some point, you’ll want to maximise your foiling time and start linking turns. This next step is a foil gybe, where you learn to change direction aiming your foil kit downwind whilst remaining on the foil. This guide is aimed at riders who are comfortable flying both directions but struggling to stay up through the gybe.

Tackling the foil gybe requires you to build up good speed on the foil, be comfortable shifting your weight and foot pressure on the board, switching hands on the wing and switching feet at some stage before or after the turn. Now this does sound like a lot to handle at once, but alongside practice and skill, having the right set-up can also ease your learning path. You want foiling kit that is going to help you gain speed on the foil easily but also being stable enough on the transitions to build up your confidence.

Best Wing Foil Board for Foil Gybes

As you progress in your wing foiling journey, your natural thought is that you would size down your board for less volume, however, when you are learning the foil gybe, stability and more volume in your board is exactly what you need. So a board with good volume, moderate width and a smooth rocker (not too flat, but not aggressive shaping) will allow you to not feel twitchy as you turn around in a gybe.

A board that’s too small makes switching feet mid-turn much harder. If you’re still falling during foot switches, size up slightly and it’ll accelerate progress.

Best Wing Foil for Foil Gybes

Glide is everything, you want a foil that will keep you flying as the speed drops during your gybe (mid-turn) so that you remain stable on the foil. Your low-aspect, large front wing that you normally learn on, can drag in the water and be sluggish on turns as they prioritise early lift. Moving to a slightly smaller, mid- to high-aspect front wing will dramatically improve glide through the turn. You won't have to put in a lot of effort to maintain speed on the foil, and as you lose speed mid-turn, it continues to glide round in the water and keep you controlled.

When gybing, height on the foil is an added bonus, as it means you are less likely to drop and touch the water as you hook the nose round, and ultimately lose that glide on the foil. Having a foil mast that is longer is the easiest way to minimise this, so 75-85cm mast is ideal, with 85cm mast making it easier.

Keeping a larger rear wing/ stabiliser is also going to keep you feeling more stable in the turn, so a stabiliser that you had with your learning foil set-up is most ideal.

Best Wing for Foil Gybes

The wing will need to be an appropriate size for the conditions you are out in and for getting you some nice speed on the foil to get into your gybe. The design on the wing is not so important, you just need to be comfortable to move your hands around on the wing, so recently this has been easier with the hard handle, or particularly the boom wings over the original soft handle wings.

What also helps you tackle the foil gybe?

The wind conditions are going to make the biggest difference, you want steady, consistent conditions with around 15-23 knots, size your wing accordingly so you are not over or under-powered. Going out in waters with small chop and not messy swell will ease gybing; flat-water sessions dramatically accelerate learning if you can practice in these conditions. You also need plenty of space to foil downwind into your gybe without being conscious of bottoming out, as such in our local spot of Poole Harbour you will definitely need high tide.

Mastering the foil gybe isn’t just about refining technique — it’s about creating a set-up that works with you, not against you. The right balance of board volume, foil glide, mast length and wing power gives you the stability to enter the carve confidently, the efficiency to maintain lift through the turn, and the control to exit still flying. The right set-up won’t land the gybe for you — but it will give you the time and stability to learn it faster and with far less frustration.
