If you’re new to windsurfing and want to invest in your own rig, a good place to begin is with second-hand windsurfing boards and sails. This is a cost-effective way to get the equipment you need while you learn, allowing you to spend more on new kit when you’ve got more experience and know what you want out of your gear.

But if you’re new to windsurfing then the thought of buying second hand might be a bit daunting. We’ve put together some top tips of things to look out for to help you feel confident in your purchase.

Firstly, avoid anything that’s too old. Even if it’s in great condition you have to remember that windsurfing equipment has developed considerably over the years. Modern boards and sails for beginners are much easier to balance on and control - you will notice a difference if you go for something too ‘retro’.

You obviously need to check any kit for signs of obvious damage. With boards check any repairs carefully and press around them to check if it feels spongy. If it does, that indicates the board is taking on water and not a good choice.

With sails you want to avoid ones with any signs of damage, especially rips or tears no matter how small. You should also look at the mono-sail (the clear part you look through). This should be completely transparent - if it’s a milky kind of colour that indicates it’s seen too much sun and will be brittle and more easily damaged or broken.
