What wing board shape should I go for? | Poole Harbour Watersports

What is the right shape board for me?

Choosing the right wing foil board shape can make a huge difference to your time on the water. From compact, sinker-style boards designed for experienced riders to wider, higher-volume boards that offer extra stability, each shape has its own advantages. But with so many options available, how do you know which one is right for you? In this guide, we’ll break down the key differences in wing board shapes, explain how they affect stability, take-off and manoeuvrability, and help you find the perfect board to suit your riding style, ability and conditions.

All-Round

An all-round wing board is one we'll all use at some point in our foiling journey. Stable and versatile, it is generally the go-to choice when learning and progressing in the sport.
All-round boards tend to be forgiving in width, fairly short (for a board), with larger sizes typically measuring around 6’2”. Their volume is concentrated in a thicker, more compact shape, providing stability when learning and making them a great choice for a wide range of conditions, especially choppier waters.  All of these features allow for you as the rider to enjoy your session to the max, whether that be learning on flat waters, or progressing and learning to gybe in stronger, choppier waters; an all-round board is an excellent choice for getting you up on the foil and focusing on your next steps. After learning to foil on an all-rounder and once you've decided which style of wing foiling you want to pursue, an all-round board may no longer be the best fit. At that point, you may want to explore the other shapes available in wing foil boards.

Our most popular all-round shape is the Duotone Sky Free board, perfect for learning and progressing initially in the sport.

Mid-Length

The newest shape in the wing foil range is the mid-length. Longer and narrow than an all-round board, their longer waterline helps the board glide more efficiently through the water during take-off, requiring less power to reach foiling speed. This makes mid-length boards an excellent choice for riders looking to maximise their freeride sessions and extend their time on the water when the wind is lighter.
The narrower outline reduces drag, while the longer shape and nose rocker helps maintain glide and directional stability. Once up on the foil, a mid-length board can still feel responsive and manoeuvrable, making it a versatile option for riders who want to improve their efficiency without sacrificing the freedom to carve, gybe and go out in stronger wind conditions too. Ideal for progressing riders and experienced foilers alike, a mid-length board offers an excellent balance of early take-off, efficient glide and all-round performance across a wider range of wind conditions.

Downwind

Downwind boards are the longest and narrowest boards in the range. Designed for specific conditions, they are best suited to intermediate and advanced riders.
They are perfect for lightwind sessions and downwinder journeys, where you want to get up on the foil as efficiently as possible in all wind conditions (strong and light). The long, pointed nose resembles that of a race sup, cutting through the water super efficiently to maximise glide and help the board get onto the foil in the lightest winds. Despite their length, downwind boards have a reduced swing weight from the narrow shape of the board and nose. These boards are particularly narrow, often no wider than 22”, and as such they are  less stable and better suited to intermediate and experienced foilers. If you're looking to enjoy longer sessions on the water, travelling from one point to another while downwinding and surfing the waves, a downwind board can be an excellent choice. If you're considering this shape, don't be afraid to choose a higher volume than you normally would, as the extra flotation can help compensate for the reduced width.

Compact

Compact wing boards are easier to identify by their smaller, stubbier shape. Shorter and narrower than your all-round boards, they are designed to offer a lively, responsive feel and are perfect for freestyle, big jumps and wave riding foilers. The boards generally come in smaller volumes, are best suited to intermediate riders looking to downsize and progress to tricks and more dynamic manoeuvres on the water.
Their shorter length means less board to move around, helping them feel nimble and responsive. They can also get onto the foil quickly with less surface area on the water, and are particularly well suited to windier or gustier conditions, where their compact size makes them easier to handle, turn and manoeuvre.
